Shame Is A Film That Is Well Worth A Look

Roger Corman directed some truly commendable films in his day, and Shame may be one of his crowning achievements. The director may be most well known for his proficiency at churning out schlocky B movies with cheap monster costumes, cute girls in their underwear and Z grade scripts, but he found time now and then to really put his heart and soul into creating more personal, meaningful films in between all the more marketable drive-in flicks. Put Shame on your queue next time you sign into your movie download service.

Shame is a truly courageous film. It deals with the issue of racism in the south, but it did so at the dawn of the civil rights era. It was easy to make a movie about racism in the eighties or nineties. Making a movie about racism in the early sixties, that’s another story entirely. Corman actually made this film in the south, in the early sixties, and he was constantly threatened and harassed by the populace of the small rural town where the film was set.

William Shatner really owns the role of the villain in this film. It’s his boyish charm that makes it work.

The concept may have begun with Adolf Hitler. It seems odd that Corman would cast such a charismatic young man in such a seedy, nasty role as villain, but as Hitler made clear, you need charisma, you need charm, and you need a handsome face to sell ugly ideas. Shatner is just incredible in the film, and you can see exactly how he scams and cons the people of the small town to believe what they know in their hearts is not true.

The final shots of the film were literally grabbed on the run. The shots used at the start of the film were actually recorded while the police were literally, physically closing in and chasing Corman out of town, forcing him to hurry up and wrap the shoot, throw all the equipment in the trucks, and get the heck out of there.

At this year’s Oscars, the lifetime achievement award goes to Roger Corman, and there has been remarkably little coverage of his life and his work. It’s too bad, because few filmmakers have contributed so much to the world of cinema for so little thanks.

Yes, Corman made a name for himself as a schlockmeister, but he also directed some real American classics and he launched the careers of Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson and Martin Scorsese, to name a few. The modern cinematic landscape wouldn’t be the same without Corman’s incredible contributions to the industry.

If you haven’t really given Corman his day in court yet, watch Shame, and then check out X: The Man With The X-Ray Eyes. By creating low-profile B flicks on low budgets, Corman was able to get away with pretty much anything by simply flying under the radar and making every film as a low-risk investment, opening up several doors for creativity and the ability to deal with sensitive issues.

But with Microsoft powering the marketing and advertising engine behind Urge, it’s sure to do well. tim movies And Haynes returned to his old reservation where he would end up literally drinking himself to death. Kevin’s task seems to be the easiest as he is involved with long-time girlfriend Vicky Lathum (Tara Reid)

Watch The Popular Show Sopranos

Filed Under (Arts) by Paige Velazquez on 06-09-2010

If you weren’t keeping up with the series when it was on, The Sopranos is one of your top must see tv and movie downloads. It’s too bad to miss out on the fun of watching a show as it’s going, as they actually had betting pools and who would get whacked, but better late than never.

The Sopranos is not a show about gangsters. Well, okay, it is, but more importantly, it’s a show about family. The core of the show is not Tony Soprano’s job, it’s how his job affects his home life with his wife and children, how it affects his friendships and relationship with more distant family members, and even his crew are really just members of his extended family. It’s a show about a family man who just happens to loan shark, steal and scam for a living.

Unlike the majority of the stories about gangsters, it’s really not about the crime stuff at all. Obviously that’s a big part of it, but it’s not about these people as gangsters, it’s about these gangsters as people. Everything that happens to these guys has, at one point or other, in some other form, happened to every one watching it. We’ve been betrayed and hurt and abandoned and loved, all of us.

Each season only brings more problems for the characters, just as every year brings more responsibilities into your lap.

The ending is really incredible. Some fans felt ripped off, but those people are missing the point. The Sopranos is not about easy answers, it’s about the difficulty of life, how confusing and unpredictable it is. The ending actually doesn’t carry any secret meaning at all. That cut to black doesn’t mean Tony was whacked, it doesn’t mean anything except that the show is over. Life keeps going, even with all the fears and worries we have to deal with, there’s no finish line, no easy, climactic ending for anyone.

The show made some important innovations in televised storytelling, sort of as a reaction to reality TV. With fictional television becoming so predictable, people turned to reality TV, and so, to compete, David Chase decided to mix the unpredictability and realism of reality TV with the strong character and story development of fiction, resulting in a show that revolutionized TV and paved the way for shows like LOST and House M. D.

Don’t go nuts trying to make sense of everything. The show is full of unanswered questions, and just as in life, you’ll never figure it all out.

If there’s a moral to the story that The Sopranos tells, it’s this: Life is hard to figure out, but tomorrow’s another day. It’s really interesting that, while the specifics may be different, you will see your own life reflected in Tony’s more so than you will in most movies or shows where the lead characters have more conventional jobs. That’s really the mark of incredible storytelling. If you liked The Cosby Show, The Sopranos deals with, essentially, the same sort of emotional territory.

How Any Parent Can Take Spectacular Baby Photographs

Some of the most gratifying pictures to take are definitely those of little ones. However, they are absolutely one of the most challenging. Here are some secrets to aid you capture those precious moments.

Crying, screaming, squirming and eating is what little ones do very well. Posing for your camera is the final thing that is on your infant’s mind. Once you capture that perfect moment frozen on a picture, you will appreciate that all your hard labor was worth it as you will have incredible photos to share once they have all grown up.

There is no doubt that photographing a newborn baby is challenging. When they are first born, they will not move around a lot and will be asleep more often than not (except for late at night – when they cry all the time). In this situation, it’s best to get up close and use a big aperture (f/1.8 ideally). This ensures that the focus of the photograph is on your infant. Endeavor to also take the shot from an fascinating position and it will make your photograph more attention-grabbing.

Persistence is the most crucial tip in taking photos of toddlers. Lots of persistence, coupled with an understanding of kids will assist you to take those shots. 6 month old infants have a propensity to be somewhat shy at the start and may need to warm up a little. This is where you have to put yourself in the shoes of your children and use a little bit of psychology. Try having fun with them. Play with them rather than being focused on the end outcome of taking the photograph.

When they are 7 months, they start to get a little more difficult to photograph. They will want to move around a lot and remaining in the same place to pose for you is out of the question. Take candid photos and try to have as many distractions around them as possible so that they don’t get bored. Focusing on their doll for example is so much more interesting than looking at your big digital camera lens.

Babies over a few months of age will be more alert and will have a lot more movement in them. Capturing photos fast is a necessity, and the infant will tire quickly. Make sure that you set your ISO at around 800 and that your digital camera on continuous mode. This will ensure that you will capture their jerky actions better otherwise you will have a lot of blurred shots.

Another great tool that I have used in photographing toddlers is the flash. Ideally an adjustable bounce flash will help to diffuse the light and not only create a soft “daylight” feel to your shots, but also help to control the quantity of motion blur that is captured due to your child’s rapid actions.

Watch out for the fingers – fingers in the mouth can be cute but on most times they will block out your baby’s face.

Using these tips have helped me capture many precious moments in my baby’s life and I have many spectacular shots to keep for many years to come.
